This Playlist is Perfect for Election Day: Music to Inspire You to Vote
Election day is almost upon us. Get inspired to head to the polls (or fire up your students to do the same, if you’re a yoga teacher) with these tunes.
In a political climate that’s as seemingly un-yogic as ours, it might feel tempting to avoid the polls this November. You might think your vote won’t matter, or that you’ll be better able to rise above the partisan chatter by not taking part at all.
Yet if you think your yoga practice isn’t related to voting, Amy Ippoliti wants you to think again. “The word yoga means ‘union,’ ‘connection,’ [and] ‘relationship,’” says the world renowned yoga teacher and co-founder of 90 Monkeys training programs. “We are in relationship both with the divine and the world. One main purpose of yoga is to serve others and engage in worldly matters so we can make it better. Vote so that you can choose leaders who will make changes that line up with the kind of world you’d like to live in!”
Think of it this way, says Ippoliti: Voting is about more than simply sharing your voice. It’s also about leaving your impact on future generations to come. Your one, little vote is worthy because you are worthy, says Ippoliti. And, your one little vote could make a big difference. To drive home this point to her fellow yogis, Ippoliti quotes the Dalai Lama, who said: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
While there are many situations in life that we can’t influence or control, voting is not one of them. So, to get in the mood to do your civic duty—privilege, really—and if you’re a yoga teacher, inspire your students to do the same, here’s your new playlist.
