The son of the nereid Thetis and of Peleus, the King of Phtia, Achilles was one of the heroes of the Trojan War and the greatest of all the greek warriors, a central figure of the Illiad. According to legend, his mother dipped him into the River Styx as an infanting, granting him invulnerability - except for his heel, which ultimately would lead to his death at the hands of Paris.
