Are The Personal Care Products You Use Every Day Really Safe? #Infographic
We use tons of personal care products daily, and we don’t think about the ingredients that they have in them. We read those long and strange names on the bottles of our shampoos and conditioners without even thinking that these components could be dangerous to our health.
The facts
You’ll be stunned to discover how many toxic chemicals infiltrate your body through your personal care products. Usually, we can’t imagine that those products could contain damaging chemicals. In fact, those chemicals are linked to toxicities, hormonal imbalance, reproductive health problems, as well as cancer.
Unfortunately, there are no legislations, established by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), stipulating that companies test their beauty products for safety. Actually, only 20% of the ingredients used to produce, out of thousands, are tested.
The EWG score
Well, it seems that those chemical ingredients could do more harm than good, in the long run. Some of these components have been tested by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and can cause real damages to our bodies.
According to the EWG study, those chemicals go through your skin barrier and could attack some of your organs in a vicious way. That’s why EWG has put together a hazard level indicator that can help designate the level of danger of each chemical.
Called the EWG score, it is divided in three categories:
- Low hazard (0-2)
- Moderated hazard (3-6)
- High hazard (7-10)
The chemical ingredients
The goal is to get the lower score possible. You can find the chemicals in many beauty products like shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and lotions. Here are some of those dangerous cosmetic chemicals:
- 1,4 Dioxane
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)
- Toluene
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)
- Triclosan
They can also be found in deodorants, antiperspirants, toothpaste, liquid hand soaps, cosmetics, spray tans, sunscreens, pharmaceutical drugs, food additives, laundry detergents and more.

In conclusion
Most of us tend to trust the safety of personal care products because they are sold in supermarkets and drugstores. Sadly, this is not always the case. They can hide dangerous chemical ingredients.
However, not everyone believes that these chemical ingredients could be harmful to us, but at least if we have all the necessary information, we can make an informed decision whether to continue using those products or not.
Over to you
What do you think of this study? Do you believe that the chemical ingredients in your personal care products could be dangerous for you or do you think it’s a little too far fetched? Will you continue to use those products or will you change to more natural ones?
